About a month ago I read Gary Taubes new book called “The Case Against Sugar”...in where he exposes the facade we have been lead to believe about Sugar. Carbohydrates were increasing - diabetes was increasing- while we went through a the anti-fat period. Sugar-pushing companies were benefitting from the ‘fat-is-bad’ for human consumption....
Taubes set the facts straight! His book is the best comprehensive- up-to -date - well respected and documented in “The Case Against Sugar”. .... a very power

Contrary to the author's assertion, this is not an impartial and rational approach to food and eating. His all-or-nothing approach contributes to the escalating eating disorder problem. I was disappointed and appalled when the author recommended a "detox" program in the last part of the book. His application of scientific evidence is unevenly applied. Instead of giving us a simpler, sensible approach to improving our nutritional intake and eating habits, this is just one more of the long line of ...more

If You Come Across A Strange Sea Vegetable, Eat It!

That’s right--it’s important to eat a wide variety of veggies, especially the odd ones! Forgot those common veggies you see at the market. Instead, “Eat all the strange, weird, and unpopular veggies instead of the boring, all-too-common ones.” If you find some strange sea vegetable from Japan, eat it!

Interesting read!

Well-researched and well-written, in an easy-to-understand format. However, I do want to caution that the information Hyman presents is as of right now, and I emphasize RIGHT NOW! Nutrition is a science and science is forever changing!

This book was awesome! I love how it was set up and how it tackled ethical and sustainable issues with each food in addition to health benefits and pitfalls. It is backed by research, explained in a way that does not require you to have an extensive medical background, leaves the reader with no further questions.

If you are confused by all the conflicting information about food and what we should eat, then read this. I heard Dr. Hyman on a podcast and decided to read this book and I am so glad I did. He has done an insane amount of research and his advice and guidelines make total sense. The government really did us dirty by promoting a low fat diet back in the 90s and 2000s, telling us that fat and saturated fat and meat would cause heart disease. Guess what? It doesn't. This is an exceptional book. Everything you want to know about food, our Food Industry, the way food is grown, the things we should become aware of that may be harming us, even though the label may say "all natural" and other names disguising a food product as healthy. Dr. Hyman breaks it down to a simple science and has plenty of studies to back this information up. Already being a fairly healthy eater, I'm not sure what I expected from this book . But I know I didn't expect to come away feeling that nothing is safe to eat!
Unless I have access to only grass fed lamb and beef, chickens that run happily around on the farm all day and produce that has never been touched by a chemical, then I'm doomed to eat garbage- literally!
I find that what this book suggests is out of the grasp of most people.

I was fortunate to receive a free copy of this book. I have followed Dr. Hyman's PBS programs in the past and I like his basics for healthy eating. I read the book and enjoyed it. It is very easy to follow.He lays out the simple basics of healthy eating,just eat nature made foods,not man made. He even lists the do not eat foods.His other list and suggestions for the good foods are laid out in order of best choices as well. This is really common sense basics for food choices. I listened to this on audiobook and I’ll be picking up a hard copy so I can refer back to it often.

What sets this book apart from other books about food is its global perspective: Dr. Hyman describes the environmental impact of each food category he discusses, generally arriving at the conclusion that foods that nourish us best also nourish our spirits and our entire planet. He has a strong focus on the humane treatment of animals, given his life experience as a (former) vegan.

Had I read this book twenty years ago, I could have saved myself a lot of stomach aches and probably thirty pounds.

SPOILER ALERT: The food puns are really bad in this review. Short review: Well organized, but take info with a grain of salt. Yuk yuk. For the most part this is well organized and the information is parsed out in a digestible way. I personally found the information on oils and grains particularly nutritive. I REALLY liked the chapter on fish, which is something I eat a lot of but am now a far better informed consumer. It also got me to try mackerel, and I learned I liked it!

Terrific information. Not quite a full 5 stars because there were a couple of items missing that I thought should be included. (For example, avocado oil is never mentioned and I think that’s an important one. Kombucha is never mentioned under beverages although he discusses fermented foods. And Brussels sprouts aren’t included on the ranked list of 49 foods based on pesticide use ). Food and nutrition are complicated. I love food (really, who doesn't?), have some serious food allergies, survived cancer (that was exacerbated by soy consumption), and grew up in a home that overflowed with the latest Prevention-recommended supplements. Dr Hyman employs his own humor by coining the term 'Pegan' Diet (combining the wisdom of various diets such as Paleo and Vegan diets, for example). He structures the book that makes it very easy to follow. It is a very accessible book and contains lots of wisdom. Excellent resource. We always question what is a reliable source in terms of food. Manufacturers sponsor studies so that the outcome is in their favor.... labels lie.... the government says we should eat so many servings of grains everyday... low fat is everywhere. I am a follower of Dr. Hyman's practices, philosophies and medicine, so I was already very familiar with the content in this book. That said, it is a great reminder of how to get it right and to take control of your own health by following a lifetime nutritional plan that supports health and longevity. This was a really good book. It simplifies nutrition and makes it easy to understand while still being comprehensive enough to cover all food groups and food choices. I learnt a lot from this book and have already started implementing some of its idea's.

I only gave this book 2 stars, not because it wasn’t good- although the information was very common sense. I admit, I am not the healthiest eater, but I knew almost all the answers to his quizzes. I am better educated to proper eating than I thought, so I didn’t really gain any new knowledge reading this book, hence the two star rating- more for my reference than any negatives towards the book. Good introduction and presentation of eating on an ancestral platform.
I was looking for one good book to be able to recommend as an introduction to new thinking in nutrition. This book could serve as a place to start.
I'm writing this a couple of months after finishing the book, and reading several others as well. It unfortunately does not stand out in my memory. If I get a chance to take another look - I'll come back and update this review.

Good information. Dr. Hyman does a nice job highlighting the science that established our food recommendations (food pyramid, low fat diets, etc.) and present more recent science, showing why these are wrong. Food group by food group, he walks through old science, new science, what is wrong, and what the heck should I eat.

As I read this book, I had a lot of 'ugh' moments where I though we were eating well, but clearly have a lot of areas of improvement.

A good, up-to-date synthesis of a multitude of food science and nutrition information. Reinforced a lot of things I already practice and even though I’m kind of a nut about these things I came away with some new information and ideas. The sections on the different food groups were very well done, but the section on the “pegan diet” and the recipes were not so helpful to me. Still, a thoughtful and approachable book if you care about what you put into your body.

Solid diet information that scientifically based

This book has opened my eyes to the ways government, the food industry & pharmaceutical industry are slowly killing us through their dietary guidelines based on the almighty dollar & not on good, scientific & environmental facts.
A must read for anyone interested in having good health not just weight loss. (Which will happen as a result of eating healthy).
