I LOVED this book. The story was fantastic, the pacing was break-neck, and everything about the setting--from the sorcery-powered race cars, to the spaceships, and starfighters, to the badass murderous exoskeleton named Ranger--was incredible. Best of all, however, are the characters. Between the copious action scenes are so many beautiful, perfectly-written moments as the cast conflicts, copulates, and tries their best to coexist with one another. I love a well-crafted heart-to-heart, and this ...more

"Furious and fun, the first book in this bold, new science fiction adventure series follows a ragtag group of adventurers as they try to find a legendary ship that just might be the key to clearing their name and saving the universe.

This was reasonably entertaining. I loved the diverse cast of characters who, for the most part, were nicely fleshed out. The dialogue was good with bits of humour sprinkled in. The world created was interesting, providing a neat SF setting where almost everyone is a magic user.

The story moves along well and mostly the pacing is pretty good. A few parts could have been written a bit more clearly, but generally I thought it was solid. That said, although there were a lot of positive elements, ov
Take A Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet, replace the alien crew members by humans (but keep it diverse and queer AF) and add lots and lots of action AND ALSO MAGIC and you've got A Big Ship at the Edge of the Universe.

This found-family/anti-hero squad of space witches takes you on one hell of a ride, FEELS and sexual tension galore included.

What do you get when you combine futuristic car racing, intergalactic treasure hunting, evil government conspiracies, renegade space pirates, and universe-spanning glyph magic? You get Alex White’s incredibly fun and engaging A Big Ship at the Edge of the Universe, the first book of the “Salvagers” series. This is a solid pick for a summer beach read, an action-heavy adventure with a nearly all-female cast of kickass protagonists that feels ready-made for a blockbuster film treatment. I got this from NetGalley/Orbit and I was really excited but I’m late for my review – sorry I got way behind schedule there for a little bit.

I didn’t know what to expect from this, I didn’t even read the blurb before opening it so when the first scene was about racing futuristic sci-fi cars with wings that run on magic I was sort of taken aback. It was fast paced and fun but took a sharp turn when one of the main characters, Nihla, is on the track and gets attacked. A creepy animalistic type wom

I love this book. It's like a cross between "Firefly" and "The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet." We have an antihero found family who are hunting a famous warship to salvage and are being hunted by a terrifying killer called Mother. Our main characters are Boots (a washed up treasure hunter and veteran of a war that wiped out her planet's population) and Nilah (the darling top car racer of the galaxy who's been framed for a high-spectacle murder). These women are very different, but they're eac ...more

Space opera with magic. Battles galore. Good guys always win. Bad guys always lose.

Haaa this was really great!! ✨

The middle was a rollercoaster of emotions, but one that always go up and up, maybe more like a rocket of emotions then! I didn't think I'd end up liking this so much, during the first 20% I didn't know what to think but then I was quickly won over by the characters and everything going on

A big ship at the end of the universe made me think of a mix between The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet (I mean even the title!), Fortune's Pawn and Revenger. Though there are

I normally don't like science fiction because the author goes into too much detail about the setting. The way all of the details are woven into this make it exciting and easy to follow. The characters are funny, sarcastic and believable. I can't wait for book 2.

First off, I want to thank the publisher and the author for an ARC of A Big Ship at the Edge of the Universe. Receiving this ARC, in no way, shape, or form, determined my overall opinions or review.

When I received this book in the mail a few weeks ago, I was already interested based off of the stunning design on the cover. It is absolutely breathtaking.
The second thing I noticed were the blurbs. Nicholas Eames, author of my #1 Read of 2017, Kings of the Wyld, has TWO blurbs. Yes, you read that r

I started out thinking that there was nobody likeable in the entire book. It took a while for me to warm up to this crew, but I most certainly did. The story is excellent, the 'verse is just the right mix of horrifying and beautiful, and the crew is quite human in all the best and worst ways.

I'm very much looking forward to the next, which will be out later this year if the date at the end of this book is accurate. Win!

Need to sleep on this one

Full review at The Quill to Live:

Here we have another of Orbit Publishing’s summer debuts, which they graciously sent me in exchange for an unbiased review. A Big Ship At The Edge Of The Universe, by Alex White, is the first book in his Salvagers series. I will tell you right off the bat that I think this is going to be one of the most divisive books I have read and a lot of people are going to love it and a lot of people are going to feel its not their t

She looked across at him, stars in her eyes. “But what a grand way to die.”

A Big Ship At the Edge of the Universe had first caught my eye with its fantastic premise--a space opera featuring a treasure hunt, two women on the run, and a F/F romance. What's not to like? And I'm pleased to say that the story lives up to my expectations. It combines high-octane action and charming characters to create a summer scifi that's perfect for fans of Firefly and the Borderlands

This story is an interesting mix of magic and science fiction. I wasn't sure I was going to like the genre mashup but after a couple of chapters White's universe grew on me. Lots of action and plot twists. I enjoyed his use of two main characters instead of focusing on just one. Although there is a sequel in progress I felt like the story concluded to a reasonable ending. I'm looking forward to book #2.

Honestly.. I’m not even going to bother with a proper review for this, as it was the first physical book I picked up and actually read from start to finish without starting something else in between.

I was generously sent A Big Ship at the Edge of the Universe from an incredibly kind, lovely woman. After seeing a YouTube video she did hauling it, and later a reading vlog all about this book I expressed how excited I was to read it myself. Only to later receive a message on Twitter saying she want

I'd read good things about Alex White's "A Big Ship at the Edge of the Universe" and, having just finished the book, I can see why. This is space opera at its best: a crew of likable characters facing off against an evil conspiracy in a galaxy powered in equal parts by science and magic. The book gets off to a high-octane start when Nilah Brio, a renowned race car driver, witnesses the murder of a rival driver during a race and finds herself framed as the prime suspect. At the same time, Elizabe ...more

Utterly magnificent! I love how Alex manages to mix magic and sci-fi with such dexterity and pulls together a tightly woven plot, compelling characters with well crafted character arcs each and a very fast paced action packed story with such finesse.

There were times when I exclaimed out loud "Nilah noooooooooooooooooooo!!!" or "Nilah, what the fuck", I laughed at Boots and Cordell's banter, admired Orna's strength and resilience and loved gentle Malik, Aisha and Didier.

Definitely a 4.5! I saw pre-views of this and knew I had to read it asap. It has been hailed as akin to Firefly/Serenity, and I can see what they mean. There's a crew with a history, a past war that was lost. These folks feel the need to right wrongs and there's quite the variety of characters. Oh, and magic (because everything's better with magic)! There's racing too, and drinking... and family. In many ways it reminds me more of Becky Chambers' "The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet" - I can se ...more

I love the world created here and the characters are interesting though some are lightly drawn. What I'm missing in this is the real hook of the story. I understand the plot and how I'm supposed to feel about it but I wasn't drawn into why I should care. There's something missing here that failed to grab me with the empathy I usually have when I'm reading. I'll definitely read the next book when it comes out because the world and its characters are excellent.

I really enjoyed this book, I didn't really know what to expect going in but it wasn't this. The magic system used is fascinating and I hope the next book explores it a little further, but it's the interactions of the crew which I really loved, and I laughed and cried along with them.

Bring on book two 😀

Loved this book and can't wait for what awaits the crew of the Capricious in future books!

The action and pacing in this book kept you wanting more as a series of events unfolds to the poking of prodding of Boots, Nihla, and the rest of the crew. Characters I initially didn't care for at all quickly became favorites.

I highly recommend it!

Tremendous book. If you like Space Opera with a dash of magic, awesome female lead characters, and amazing chapters that would put the pulp serials to shame with how action-packed they are, this is the book for you.

I got this book in a Goodreads Giveaway. It was a fast paced SF thriller with some nasty twists. There evidently is a sequel coming, as all thwe bad guys have not been taken care of. Some military and psi talent in book.
