8-Bit Google Maps (aka Quest Mode) was one of Google’s flagship 2012 April Fool’s Day jokes. With Quest mode toggled on, maps adopted the look of a classic 80’s world map (specifically Dragon Quest’s world map).
Working within a larger team, my role was to art direct others and personally create various assets, including a custom version of the Google logo, Pegman, map markers and the overlaying UI. I also created 11 landmarks and oversaw the creation of numerous others, offering feedback and creative direction.
If you’d like to see more of 8-Bit maps, it received coverage from numerous publications, such as Mashable, USA Today, and The Huffington Post.
Note: All of my work has been scaled anywhere from 200-400% its original size.
